for life's bleachable moments. >> abc7 news starts right now with live breaking news. >> breaking news. the coast guard suspends the search for a boat that may have disappeared off the coast two days ago. this is exclusive video only on abc7. the search effort has been called off for four members of the same family. >> only this morning the search had expanded beyond the immediate area off the central coast to near monterey. all the way to hawaii and the pacific northwest. but now a twist in the mystery which began with a distress call. now, amy hollyfield is live at the coast guard station with the latest. amy? >> there is no sign of the boat. no sign of the people. they have been looking single sunday afternoon. at 10:00 this morning the coast guard made the call. >> two daze of active searching

covering over 20,000 miles the size of the state of west virginia and the commander made the determination to suspend active searching on this case. >> they tried one more time this morning. a c130 with a crew took off from sacramento before 7:00 joining a cutter that spent the night on the water looking for the missing family of four. there has been no sign of the boat or the people since sunday afternoon. the only evidence officials have to go on is two radio calls. >> we are abandoning ship. we are abandoning ship. >> the man said he was on board with a woman and two children and the boat was taking on water but no one has come forward to report anyone m or identify the family. the coast guard has not found any wreckers of a sailboat -- any records of a sailboat by the name. the coordinator responded to questions whether there call was a fake. >> we are not investigating it

directly as a hoax but i will say we are pursuing every avenue and it certainly is a possibility. >> the case has similarities to two hoaxes last year in texas and new jersey. in both, authorities got a radio call of disstress, and they turned out to be fake calls. the coast guard commander here says they will continue to treat this call as a legitimate call unless proven otherwise. >> from our perspective it doesn't matter whether it is a hoax or a search. we approach every search as if it is our own children. >> they say they will continue to investigate they have internet hundreds of thousands dollars on this search and they say they have put their certain and rescue crews live at risk if this does town out to be a hoax it will be very disappointing. new information about a bay area couple missing in south america.

peru police say it is possible jamie neal and garrett hand might have gotten on a boat to ecuador not on their original itinerary. surveillance video shows the couple on a bus to lima peru, january 26. that is about the same time the communication on facebook and with friends stopped along with their bank activity. jamie neal's sister says she has never gone this long without talking to her sister. >> i have this nasty gut feeling that something is wrong. i want someone to find my sister >> the couple was on a bicycle tour when they disappeared. the state department has issued a kidnapping wanting to american travelers. at least two bay area high schools are also canceling trips to peru. >> oakland police arrested at least two people and recovered several guns when a stand off ended early this morning. you can see where the stand off took place at 8 8th avenue and 18th street.

it ended after 11 hours when a swat team served a search warrant at 3:00 a.m. the trouble began yesterday afternoon when police saw a shooting but no one was hurt. their investigation led officers to the homes on 8 8th avenue. the f.b.i. and alameda sheriff helped. san jose politician are -- police are asking for help for a hit-and-run driver who left a woman to die at 1:00 o'clock this morning. cornell this is a tough case. >> it is. police reaching out to the public for any information on this case today. behind me, red spray paint, left behind, where a woman was struck, killed, here on monterey road by a driver who did not stop. the victim was possibly homeless. it happened at 1:00 o'clock a.m. police say the woman was crossing. when she was hit by a car going south on monterey. the driver kept going.

she die add short time later. a witness saw the accident from afar and called 9-1-1 and police have talked to that person and from the debris left behind have been able to tell what type of car was possibly involved in the hit-and-run accident. >> from the debris we narrowed to a honda that coincided with the information provided by the witness as far as smaller, darker-colored vehicle similar to what we assume will be a honda accord. (inaudible). >> the man has a restaurant across the street and he says this road is more like a busy highway with drivers going too fast. again, the car police are looking for is possibly a black honda accord with extensive front end damage. police are still trying to identify the woman who lost her life here. if you have any information call the san jose police.

san francisco police are now offering a $10,000 reward for information in a cold case, the 2005 fatal shooting of a nasa engineer in the city on the eighth anniversary of the death of 29-year-old who was slot and killed in the 100 block of velmar terrace of 2005 in february in a packed car. he was married with two children and worked as an engineer as nasa's research center in mountain view. investigators are encouraging witnesses or anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. lag on to our website at abc7.com and look under "see it on tv." a poll found growing support for gun control among california voters, especially among women. a field poll released find 61 percent of state voters think it is more important to control firearms than to protect the right of gun owners.

>> in egypt the death toll from a hot air balloon crash has risen to 19. a british tourist and the pilot are the only survivors. they jumped before it exploded near luxor, one of the worst tourism accidents in history. san francisco photographer says he was in another hot air balloon when it happened. >> we heard a loud explosion, looked behind and saw a lot of explosion coming from a balloon. >> we were close to the ground and in luxor they burn the sugarcane so we thought it was coming from the ground not a balloon. >> he took these pictures shortly before the crash, tourists included citizens from japan, hong kong, britain and france. no americans were on board.

>> we have new details from the vatican on the efforts to select a new pope. the dean of the college of cardinals will summon the cardinals on friday for the first meeting on monday march 4. at that meeting the cardinals will decide when they will hold a conclave to vote on the new pope. the vatican announced the current pope benedict will be called emeritus after he steps down. >> despite tensions between the united states and north korea former nba star rodman arrived this morning. he is in the communist country with several globetrotters and a crew from a magazine planning to run a basketball camp for kids and play pickup games with the locals. it is for new tv show. the state department says it was not contacted about the trip. >> and our meteorologist, mike nicco in. >> a lot of sunshine.

>> daly city, dublin, los gatos and all bay area, this is abc7 news. >> a startling new report showing more teenagers are dying in car crashes. the numbers are eye popping. in the first six months of last year the delegate rate if teens jumped 20 percent nationwide. 240 teens were killed in crashes between january and june according to the governor's highway safety association. 16 and 17-year-olds were involved in the most fatal accidents. federal data if the entire year is available later this year. >> new this morning, consumer reports has just released the list of top-rated vehicles, lexus is tops with overall score of 79 for excellence. subaru and mazda did well with 76. toyota is at 74. the scores are out of 100.

68 degrees on the board walk. 63 to 65 on the peninsula as you head to the coast today it is brisk with temperature in the mid-to-upper 50's and low 60's in downtown and south san francisco and same in bodega bay, brisk and mid-to-upper 50's and ten degrees warmer in the north bay and 63 and 64 and 65 degrees on the east bay shore, and san ramon is cooler than everyone else and you get a breeze that comes up the canyon from the bay and that keeps you cooler, and everyone else is going to be in the mid-to-upper 60's. tonight, check out the temperatures, we are back in the mid-to-upper 30's inland, and frost is less likely and the air mass is so dry under a clear or mostly clear skies we don't have any fog forming in the north bay valley. low 40's around the bay shore and san francisco is about 43 degrees. here is the seven-day outlook, talking about temperatures that will jump to near 70 by thursday
